Moving house or office premises might be described as both cathartic and chaotic and having done one, and about to embark on another in the next week I feel in a good position to judge. On the one hand, there is the excitement of moving to a new place; a fresh start, new outlook (in more ways than one possibly), more space and a chance to indulge in new building or gardening projects. On the other hand, there is the inherent chaos of boxing things up, arranging transport, lengthy discussions about whether certain bits of furniture deserve to be kept in the first place, and endless conversations with utility company call centres who seem intent on disconnecting you too early in one property and not connecting you for days in the other. Oh, the joy.
Having said that, we’re excited at BPM Maintenance about moving to our new office in Park Lane in Bath, not least because our staff will have somewhere to go at lunchtimes in the summer, (the lovely Royal Victoria Park) We’re moving into a space in which we’ll make a number of changes to give us state of the art offices and accommodation, but at the same time retaining the original character of the building. It’s the sort of challenge we thrive on and in a way, symptomatic of what we do best. Maintaining, improving and upgrading. That’s not to say we don’t like the nitty gritty jobs, so here’s a timely reminder of some of the things you might want to check in your own property and we may be able to help you with:
Check that gutters have not been blocked or damaged by leaf debris or ice, damaged gutters can cause disproportionate water damage over the long term. Check for any damage to flat roofs or roof tiles caused by heavy wind and storms. If your heating system hasn’t been performing over the winter, consider whether the boiler needs servicing; is it efficient and safe? Last, but not least, if you are moving house or commercial premises, don’t take the daffodil bulbs from the grounds, it’s just not good etiquette.
